Your adventures become a breeze when getting around Cancun by public transport.

Taxis

For privacy, comfort and safety, the taxis are your best bet for getting around Cancun. Taxis are abundant, and you won’t stand that long waiting for one to come. Unlike most taxis around the world that are metered, fares are negotiated in Cancun. So before you sit back and relax in your Cancun taxi, a good tip for you to learn is to ask the local people what the rough price would be by taxi, and from there you can effectively haggle a favorable cost for your trip. Alternatively, when you are in a taxi, question your taxi driver about the cost of various journeys and get a general idea. If you find a fair taxi driver, you could even take his number and agree to call him or her directly for getting around Cancun.

Public Buses

Public buses are made to serve a great mass of people and that includes tourists like you getting around Cancun. They are very cheap, charging a measly $1 USD a trip, some with the comfort of a cool air conditioning plus other added features like video shows and Wi-Fi connection. Public buses make the rounds come day and night. When you are in the Hotel Zone, those that are marked R1 and R2 are the right buses for you to take. Just don’t drink too much for you to clearly see the bus markings and stops.

ADO Buses

No other buses in Cancun match the quality of service that Ado Buses give. They are considered top class and have their routes to important points like the Cancun Airport, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Not so much for getting AROUND Cancun as getting OUT of Cancun, you can get all the convenience passing panoramic places with a fine air conditioning system and great movie shown while on board.

Mayab Buses

Second class buses like the Mayab buses offer convenience too, but not as highly touted as that of the ADO Buses. You can make like an early booking as you can buy tickets a day ahead of your scheduled ride. They stop at key points, like at the exotic paradise of Puerto Morelos.

Playa Express

If you’re travelling light and doesn’t want a long wait, the Playa Express buses fit you. They leave at a 20 minute interval, and is priced reasonably. So if you’re planning to visit Playa del Carmen, be on the lookout for a bus of Playa Express.

The White Vans known as Colectivos

For a much quicker travel to Isla Mujeres, get to Puerto Juarez first by riding the small white vans commonly referred to as Colectivos (some are not white at all but blue and other colors but look like a combi van). They are made for those on the budget, and for those who don’t mind feeling bumpy and rough. Great for getting around Cancun and visiting the less touristic areas.
