Have you grew up listening to the rock star Sammy Hagar? If you have, then you already know that Sammy was the frontman for Van Halen. Sammy visited Cabo San Lucas during the early 80’s and fell in love with this sleepy and charming fishing village. During the early 80’s the town didn’t have any major developments going on, and at that time Sammy visualized opening a tequila and rock ‘n roll bar that would have a stage where he and other musicians could perform. How did Sammy’s dream of the rock ‘n roll Cabo Wabo go from being a vision into becoming a popular and sought out legacy? Continue to read to find out how Sammy Hagar did this.

The Tequila Bar – The Cantina

The Cabo Wabo Cantina opened its doors in Cabo San Lucas in 1990 thanks to the funding and partnership of the Van Halen band members and Sammy. This new venture was very exciting, but in the early days the cantina struggled financially due to the mismanagement. Sammy had to purchase the shares of his band members of Van Halen to keep his vision alive, then he started searching for a new management team that would understand his vision and within no time at all the cantina and tequila bar started thriving.

The Rock ‘n Roll Hangout for Locals and Tourists

Sammy Hagar wanted the rock n roll Cabo Wabo Cantina and tequila bar to be more than just a bar for the tourists, but a favorite hangout for the locals too, so he focused on his establishment on being the favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Today, Cabo San Lucas is a thriving resort and vacation destination and one of the most popular and sought out hangouts in the town is Cabo Wabo Cantina where everyone parties until 4am. The cantina doesn’t play the latest pop hits, top 40’s, or hip hop music like the other nightclubs in the town does, but the Cabo Wabo is the place for true rock ‘n rollers. The Cabo Wabo Cantina features live music by Sammy Hagar, local bands, and many of Sammy’s rock star friends.

Cabo Wabo Tequila

The Cabo Wabo Cantina served popular tequila brands for many, many years until Sammy Hagar started selling his own brand, which is called Cabo Wabo Tequila in the latter part of the 90’s. Sammy got together with a Jalisco family-owned and operated distillery to produce his premium tequila, and as soon as the tequila was introduced it had a major following. In 1999, in Napa Valley a wine importer began importing the Cabo Wabo Tequila to the U.S., which was a huge success in the U.S. and outside of Mexico. The Cabo Wabo Tequila brand is so popular in the U.S. that it is the second best brand of premium tequila.

Where Did Cabo Wabo Cantina Come From?

Sammy Hagar came up with Cabo Wabo Cantina way before the tequila brand was created or the nightclub. He used a creative way with words. Sammy Hagar was looking at a man who had too much to drink one evening. The drunken man was staggering this way, then staggering that way, and he was just having a difficult time trying to walk, then Sammy said to himself that the drunken man was doing the “Cabo Wobble”, which later he shortened to just Cabo Wabo. Sammy knew at that moment that it was the perfect name for the tequila bar and nightclub that he would own someday in Cabo San Lucas, and he was on point with that name.
