Cancun Vacations and Tulum

Tulum is just over an hour and a half by car or taxi from the hotel zone in Cancun, making it an ideal day trip for those who decide to rent a car on their Cancun vacations. You can also visit the Mayan ruins at Tulum on an organized excursion or by taking a local bus from Cancun.

One of the reasons why Tulum, along with the famous pyramids at Chichen Itza, is so popular is because of its excellent condition, with painted frescos still visible inside some of the temples. Furthermore, the location of the Mayan ruins on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea some 12 meters high make them a unique encounter with the ancient world. A day trip on your Cancun vacations to Tulum will also provide ample opportunity for you to laze on the stunning beach at Tulum, which is considered among the most breathtaking in all Mexico.

Cancun Vacations - Tulum Ruins

In its heyday from the 13th to 15th century, Tulum was known as Zama, meaning the City of Dawn in Mayan, although its current name, Tulum makes reference to the thick limestone wall that protects the ruins. The reason for the wall is contested with some historians claiming that Tulum’s wall was meant for protection, while others say it was to separate the plebeians from the nobles and priests. Tulum is one of the last Mayan settlements to succumb to the Spanish invasion during the 16th century when it is said that European diseases brought about the demise of Tulum.

When you enter the Mayan archeological site in Tulum you can explore any number of incredible structures, with the most prominent being the Temples, and the Castle (el Castillo). In the temples you will still be able to see the remains of frescoes painted on the walls depicting gods and the Mayan cosmology.

Tulum is certainly one of the most highly recommended Mayan archeological sites to visit during your Cancun vacations and is worth the drive from Cancun.
