Though the resorts in Puerto Vallarta boast lovely, secure beaches, Puerto Vallarta has no shortage of great public beaches for tourists and locals alike to enjoy. In fact, there are so many that it could be hard to choose which you want to visit. One thing that it is not hard to see, however, is that staying in the resorts and not visiting the public beaches would be a real loss! We have made a list of Puerto Vallarta’s best beaches for families, party goers, and lovers of water sports, so you don’t need to do all the proverbial legwork involved in research.

Puerto Vallarta’s Best Beaches for Families

Nuevo Vallarta Beach

This beach can be found to the north of Puerto Vallarta and is really an amazing place for young families to have a day out. You see the waves here are shallow, but lively, so they make great waves for playing in, or for boogie-boarding in. The beach is also a great place for those who love to kite-surf! Nuevo Vallarta beach can seem to be endless as it merges almost seamlessly with Bucerias beach.

Pelicanos Beach

Playa Pelicanos is much quieter than many of the other public beaches in Puerto Vallarta which makes it perfect for young families seeking a relaxed day out! The beach is a hotspot for locals and national tourists in particular, though you’ll find some international visitors, too, enjoying the low, gentle waves and pristine sandy beaches.

Puerto Vallarta’s Best Beaches for Water Sports

Punta Mita beach (Anclote)

Punta Mita is a playground not just for the rich and famous, but also for those who would learn to surf and paddle-board. Though the beach is lined by some of the very best, and some of the most expensive, restaurants and stores it is also home to some of the best paddle-boarding and surfing schools in Puerto Vallarta. You might even catch sight of a millionaire or two while you learn how to ride the waves.

Sayulita Beach

Sayulita is a veritable Mecca for surfers; it is not just a beach, you see, but a whole town which loves all things bohemian. The waves are strong and reliable; surfers will find them choice, strong swimmers may find them challenging but enjoyable. The beach is big enough that swimmers and surfers won’t have to compete for space. Add to this the fact that there are some great beach-side restaurants and swimwear stores, and you can see that this is a town perfect for those who love the surfer lifestyle.

Puerto Vallarta’s Best Beaches for Party Lovers

Los Muertos Beach

Los Muertos beach is a vibrant and warm beach that is perfect for young couples and groups looking to have a good time in sun-soaked Mexico. Los Muertos is situated in Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town and is generally abuzz with music, laughter, colorful beachwear, and beach bars/clubs. The beach is long and slim with calm, low waves that are perfect for swimming in. At the end of the beach there is a new pier from which you get a water taxi to beaches further south; some of these beaches and coves are really quite lovely and idyllic. They make lovely spots for a private day together.

Camarones Beach

This lovely beach can be found next to the Malecon, where the boardwalk starts up; a long stretch of sandy beach which has certified lifeguards on site during the busy tourist seasons. With that said, the currents here are strong and the drop off is steep so be careful when swimming even when there are lifeguards on duty. This beach is frequented by locals and tourists alike, so you won’t find it hard to get beach umbrellas, snacks, or drinks while you’re relaxing on the sand.

Though these are only a few of Puerto Vallarta’s best beaches available to you when you are vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, they are some of the most wonderful. Make sure that you see all that Puerto Vallarta has to offer when you visit; the public beaches are big parts of the community from Los Muertos to Tomatlan. These beaches are a great starting point, but be sure to explore when you get there.
