Cabo Hike to Mt. Solmar

To start with, make sure you are prepared for a good hike. If you are in great shape, the hike should be no problem. If you are a bit out of practice or have some physical limitations, make sure to plan ahead to be prepared. A good pair of walking or hiking shoes are required for this hike. Flip flops are perfect for the beach, but the rocks along the hike to Mt. Solmar can be slippery. To keep yourself safe from a dangerous fall, wear appropriate footwear. Also, make sure to bring along water and a snack. In addition, the sun’s rays can be quite strong in Cabo San Lucas. Make sure to wear a hat and sunglasses, too.

Where to Start

Wondering where to start the Mt. Solmar hike? Local tour guide Enrique is the best choice for a guided tour to Mt. Solmar. He owns a dog shelter at the base of the Naval base and hikers need to pass through his property to get to the trailhead. Enrique offers hiking tours that are fun and interesting. Dog lovers will enjoy the hike as well and dogs are welcome to join on the hike. On the way, keep an eye out for snakes on the trail. Enrique or his assistant may regularly whistle which keeps hawks in the air circling for snakes. In addition, the dogs that the guide brings along are trained to alert hikers if there are any snakes as well.  As you hike up the path, watch your footing, and take the time to enjoy beautiful vistas and take pictures along the way. Once you reach the top, hikers will enjoy amazing views of the sparkling Sea of Cortez and desert landscapes down below.

Additional Hiking Tips:

It is worthwhile to note that the hike up is quite steep in some areas. Remember,  closed-toed shoes such as sneakers should be worn or hiking boots if possible.  In addition, hikers should be in reasonable shape to participate. If someone has health issues or physical limitations, this hike is not the best choice as parts of the trail are difficult and require a bit of semi-rock climbing. In order to maneuver over tough sections, intense leg and upper bodywork is required in order to reach the top.  Also, remember to wear a hat and bring water with you as well. Regardless of what time of year you visit Cabo, you will be sweating by the time you reach Mt. Solmar’s peak.
